A vital portrait of writer and social critic James Baldwin, this Oscar-nominated documentary is a searing exploration of the history of racism in the United States. Available to rent on QFT Player.
Using Baldwin’s unfinished manuscript, Remember This House, as its basis, I Am Not Your Negro tackles race relations through his reminiscences on the assassinations of three of his friends – Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. Director Raoul Peck juxtaposes Civil Rights era footage with contemporary footage, highlighting the continued resonance of Baldwin’s words – and how racism still permeates today.
It’s an essential look at the work of a brilliant writer, and a sobering and thought-provoking reminder of how far we still have to go.
