#WeAreQFT: Caleb Roberts

19 March 2020

If we can't watch films together then let's talk about films together. Caleb Roberts tells us which faceless character he would give a hug, his favourite movie quote and which two (yes, two) people would play him in a film in this edition of #WeAreQFT.

WeAreQFT Caleb Roberts

calebroberts_weareqft-1.jpgYou are stuck at home and your favourite cinema is closed. What five films do you watch?

Sadly, since this is my current reality - in no particular order I’ve got to go with:

Spirited Away (Hayao Miyazaki, 2003)

In the Mood for Love (Wong Kar-Wai, 2000)

Faces Places (Agnès Varda and JR, 2017)

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Edgar Wright, 2010)

Paris is Burning (Jennie Livingston, 1990)

What three words would you use to describe QFT?

My second home.

What is your earliest cinema-going memory?

I vividly remember going to see Shark Tale (2004) with my dad and absolutely loving it. The same can’t be said for him. I also think this was my first introduction to Martin Scorsese.

What film do you dislike that everyone else loves?

I am not fond of Blade Runner (1982)…please…don’t come for me, I’m sorry. Aesthetically however, *chefs kiss* beautiful.

What is your guilty pleasure film?

As an MA Film student, people always laugh at me for this but Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds (2005) is my biggest guilty pleasure film. The thing is, I don’t feel guilty about it because I love it so much. It’s a fantastically nostalgic sci-fi classic that I grew up with and, to this day, I’m still terrified when I hear the sound of a foghorn.

What is your favourite film soundtrack?

If I’m feeling emotional, any soundtrack composed by Joe Hisaishi. If I want to bop, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 (2014).

What film character would you love to meet and why?

I’ve always wanted to give No Face from Spirited Away (2001) a hug. He just needs a hug.

What is the best thing about going to the cinema?

It’s the entire experience. The build up to buying your ticket, grabbing some £2 student beers, getting your favourite spot, and enjoying something incredible with your mates. As comforting as it is to curl up with a blanket and watch your favourite films on demand, it’s just not the same.

Do you have a special place in the cinema where you always sit?

Either the top right-hand corner, or slap bang in the middle three rows from the screen. There is no method to this madness.

What is your favourite movie quote?

“I had nothing to do. I wanted to hear your voice.” - Chow Mo-Wan, In the Mood for Love (2000).

Who would play you in a film of your life?

Daniel Radcliffe and Tilda Swinton interchangeably, but no one questions it.
