Before Gaga, before Streisand, there was Garland! Join us to celebrate Judy Garland’s 100th birthday, with this special screening of A Star is Born.
The Hollywood dream, and its dark side, is given the musical treatment in George Cukor’s 1954 epic. Full of song, drama and emotion, the film revolves around a spellbinding Judy Garland as rising talent Esther, discovered by fading matinee idol Norman Maine (James Mason). As her star rises, his descends – a classic tale of la la land.
Generating an entire world within its generous running time, Cukor’s version boasts superb songs by Harold Arlen and George Gershwin including the sublime and devastating The Man Who Got Away and a truly extraordinary performance from Garland that landed her an Oscar nomination, with Time calling her performance "just about the greatest one-woman show in modern movie history."
