To celebrate the first anniversary of QFT Player's launch we present a special free screening of The Belfast Ensemble’s provocative and powerful Abomination: A DUP Opera.
The first film to stream on QFT Player, Abomination was watched in 33 countries by nearly 6,000 people. This free encore screening is presented in partnership with The Belfast Ensemble and Outburst Queer Arts Festival. Available to watch for free on QFT Player from Fri 2 - Sun 4 April.
Fusing opera with drag, cabaret and political satire, acclaimed composer Conor Mitchell and the Belfast Ensemble’s Abomination: A DUP Opera features historical and recent comments by DUP members on gay rights, trans lives, marriage equality, 'poofs' and 'perverts'. It brilliantly explores the power of words around LGBTQ+ experience and challenges us to create a new narrative beyond the bluster and bruising of politicians and media.
Originally supported by Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Arts Council of Northern Ireland and British Council NI, the critically acclaimed 70 minute work received a five star review in The Guardian and won the Best New Opera Award at the Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards 2020.
"Clear-eyed, redemptive and entertaining, Conor Mitchell’s finely crafted response to a notorious episode of homophobic hate speech deserves to be seen far and wide." - Fiona Maddocks, The Guardian
