Season Cinemagic On the Pulse

Nine short and surreal animations from around the world that inhabit bizarre and strange worlds. At the end of the screening vote for your favourite short film.

All short films are either non-dialogue, in English or with English subtitles.

My Name is Edgar and I Have a Cow (Dir: Filip Diviak, Czech Republic, 2023)

Edgar leads an utterly predictable life. He spends his days nurturing his favourite plant, saving up for a new car and keeping his mother company, as he loves her very much. One day, when visiting an abattoir, he witnesses the birth of a calf. After that, nothing is the same.

Été 96 (Dir: Mathilde Bédouet, France, 2023)

On August 15, Paul, his family and friends have their annual picnic on Callot Island but get trapped by the tide. Upset and caught between childhood and adulthood, Paul becomes aware of his individuality.

Papa Bouteille (Dir: Lucie Carraz, Éléonore Deprun, Lalita Bruguiere, Clément Bretou, Pierre Étienne Mazet, Fred Marcassoli, France, 2023)

We follow an 8-year-old child's daily life. From their eyes, we see their dad’s alcoholism.

Dolores (Dir: Cecilia Andalón, Mexico, 2024)

Dolores is a 7-year-old girl who just wants to play; but when she runs away from a fire and accidentally falls into grave, a surreal and macabre journey begins.

Catfish (Dir: Aurélie Galibois, Aurélie Martin, Camille Naud, Cristina Ganusciac, Hee Young Park, Vedushi Sinha, France, 2024)

As Elise moves into a new apartment with her parents, her pet cat Roger turns into a goldfish. Distraught, she goes back to her childhood home to turn him back.

Acrobats (Dir: Eloïse Alluyn, Hugo Danet, Anna Despinoy, Antonin Guerci, Alexandre Marzin, Shali Reddy, France, 2024)

A girl comes back home to an oppressive living room and throws up acrobats in front of her family.

Gilbert (Dir: Arturo Lacal Ruiz, Alejandro Salueña García, Jordi Jiménez Xiberta, Spain, 2024)

Gilbert and Sullivan are inhabitants of a small archipelago in the middle of the ocean, where Sullivan is a trumpeter, and Gilbert delivers packages with his gondola among the inhabitants of these floating houses. But one day Gilbert decides to keep a package.

Skroll (Dir: Marten Visser, Netherlands, 2024)

Humans and some kind of gnomes have posted videos on social media platforms in their animated dimension. This film is a short compilation of these clips.

Scrubby (Dir: Paul Vollet, Germany, 2023)

Scrubby wants to live in his mother’s thick fur forever, but she’s starting to lose hair. When he brings back a strand of hair that had flown away, all he finds is a pile of hair and a trail in the snow. In search of his mother, Scrubby encounters a naked, freezing creature.

Cinemagic ‘On the Pulse’, is an exciting month-long programme of screenings, film education events, talks and workshops on the short film genre and short form storytelling. We have programmed a season of the very best international short films, classic heritage shorts and cartoons, as well as showcasing short films made by local young filmmakers.
