Atlantean is a quartet of documentary films and accompanying book (The Atlantean Irish, 2005).
The films and book dismissed as myth the popular belief in origins of the inhabitants of Ireland and proposed instead that they are part of a common ‘Atlantean’ culture that includes the western seaboard of Europe and North Africa.
In a style familiar to early Adam Curtis films (but a decade earlier, and funnier), Quinn meanders around a thesis which positions personal theory against traditionally accepted truths. These wonderful, heavily musical films include studies of Sean-nós singing, coins, walking sticks, riverdance and many other things, but links them in a cohesive, playful way. You do not need to agree with the theories to enjoy the film, and the singing, and the human connections which Bob makes on his travels.
