Adapted from celebrated artist and filmmaker Kahlil Joseph’s renowned video art installation, BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions mirrors the sonic textures of a vinyl album.
It weaves fiction and history in an immersive journey where the fictionalised figures of W. E. B Du Bois and Marcus Garvey join artists, musicians, Joseph’s family, and even Twitter chats, in a vision for black consciousness.
Joseph is known for immersive, experiential music films such as Lemonade for Beyonce and good kid, m.A.A.d city for Kendrick Lamar. BLKNWS is a deep cinematic journey, an uncategorisable film that challenges viewers to engage with its fluid and absolutely fascinating stream of consciousness form. High and low culture, philosophy and twitter. Early in the voyage, Agnès Varda, as ever, gives us a clue – the film is neither a documentary or a fiction – but it is certainly cinema.
