Kit Carruthers (Sheen), a young garbage collector, and his impressionable girlfriend Holly Sargis (Spacek) leave their South Dakota hometown on the run after killing Holly's father. On their way towards the Badlands of Montana they leave a trail of dispassionate and seemingly random murders in their wake.

Malick's (Days of Heaven) impressionistic take on the notorious Charles Starkweather killing spree of the late 1950s uses a serial-killer narrative as a springboard for an oblique teenage romance. This debut has spawned countless imitations, but none have equalled its strange sublimity.
