Mia Hansen-Løve (Eden, Things to Come) explores intersections between love and work, life and movies, and fact and fiction, in this satisfyingly complex romantic drama. Starring Tim Roth, Vicky Krieps, Mia Wasikowska and Anders Danielsen Lie.
Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread) stars as Hansen-Løve surrogate Chris, who, alongside her partner and fellow screenwriter Tony (Tim Roth, Pulp Fiction), retreats to Fårö Island, the location of some of Ingmar Bergman’s biggest films, where he also took up residence.
Hoping to capture some divine filmmaking inspiration from one of the greats, she sets about writing her new script, ‘The White Dress’, detailing a young filmmaker falling in love on the eponymous island, whilst grappling with her fraying current relationship, as the pressures of creative life take hold.
What follows is an intoxicating blurring of reality and fiction, as the events of her film (realised by Mia Waskiowska, Crimson Peak & Anders Danielsen Lie, The Worst Person in the World) and those of her own life intertwine…
A candid, self-reflexive look at how the best art mines from the personal, this arthouse treasure draws upon Hansen-Løve’s own former relationship with fellow director Olivier Assayas in examining the interplay between cinema and love.
"Wasikowska and Danielsen Lie deliver extraordinarily layered performances, channelling the familiarity of people who have already lived a major story together, along with the painful knowledge that this story is done." - Little White Lies
