A lighthearted romance, Cheerful Wind is a breezy tale of a love triangle.

Hsing-hui (Feng) works as an assistant photographer and lives with her partner Lo Zai (Chan). Their semi-balanced harmony is threatened when a blind man Chin-tai (Bee) wanders onto the set of a commercial they are working on. Later, despite her commitments, she strikes up a romance with the blind man while visiting Taipei. The ultimate question arises: who will she choose?

Cheerful Wind features Kenny Bee and Anthony Chan from the popular band The Wynners. Bee and Chan show Hou’s attempt to connect with younger audiences and the contemporary themes that impact upon their lives, a marker of the New Taiwan Cinema emerging during this period.

Hou Hsiao-hsien’s second feature film was restored in 2018 by the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute (TFAI) and IMAGICA Lab.

Screening as part of The Early Films of Hou Hsiao-hsien, curated by HOME, Manchester, with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Republic of China (Taiwan).
