Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson excel in Lynne Ramsay’s (Ratcatcher, We Need to Talk About Kevin) bold and brave film about a woman experiencing postpartum psychosis.
Grace (Lawrence) and Jackson (Pattinson) should be living in bliss, with a new baby and a fixer-upper home in the country. But Grace’s psyche has changed following the birth, unleashing in her a restlessness that drives her to the brink of madness.
With her signature bold and visceral style, Ramsay’s adaptation of Ariana Harwicz’s acclaimed novel is a shattering portrait of psychosis. Lawrence is mesmerising as Grace – electrifying and primal, but also impressively controlled, skilfully balancing her anxiety, anger and sense of isolation in a world she increasingly feels detached from.
It’s an intense yet strikingly beautiful character study and, as always with Ramsay, a vital and rewarding piece of cinema.
"The cinema of Lynne Ramsay is cinema of the senses, raw and delicate and alive... Jennifer Lawrence completely understands this, inhibiting Grace with a total lack of vanity." Little White Lies
