A creative documentary combining archive film, contemporary footage, and music to offer a unique perspective on Vietnam through the lens of its ubiquitous motorbike culture.

A symbol of Vietnam and its history, motorbikes encompass notions of work, class, travel, technology, and escape. With a population of 97 million, and 45 million registered motorbikes (amongst the highest in South East Asia) that’s almost one bike for every two people. The sounds of engines and horns create a symphony of Vietnamese life.

Stepping away from Hollywood’s portrayals of the American/Vietnam War, Dust & Metal offers an unorthodox perspective of Vietnam told through the lens of the country’s ubiquitous mode of transport.

This screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Esther Johnson, hosted by Joan Parsons, Interim Head of Culture and Arts, QUB.

Star Nhà Ease: Vietnamese Cinema is presented by Live Cinema UK & Tuyết Vân Huỳnh with the support of the BFI, awarding funds from the National Lottery & supported by Longdan LTD.
