In hope of a better life, two young high school sweethearts, Ah-yun (Hsin Shu-fen) and Wan (Chien-wen Wang), decide to leave their desolate mining hometown and head for Taipei.
Once there they find numerous obstacles facing them and their relationship. Set in 1960s Taiwan, the film offers a strikingly stark contrast between rural and urban life.
Dust in the Wind is director Hou’s seventh feature film and marks his first collaboration with screenwriter Wu Nien-jen. Now a more established filmmaker, it displays the director’s developing visual style and his often-fatalistic approach to romantic love.
