Fantastic Man is a documentary investigating Nigerian musician William Onyeabor, a man shrouded in mystery and myth. Available to watch for free on QFT Player.

Between the ’70s and ’80s, Onyeabor self-released a series of unique synth-based funk records (numerous speculations can be found to explain the funds he used for such endeavours, including Russian ties). His records soon found their way to discerning record collectors, eventually coming to the attention of New York record label Luaka Bop, founded by David Byrne.

Directed by Jake Sumner, Fantastic Man tells the story of Luaka Bop's attempt to track William down, speaking to fans such as Damon Albarn, Caribou and Femi Kuti, and travelling to Nigeria to meet those who've worked with him in a bid to uncover the truth about his story.

Thanks to Yale Evelev at Luaka Bop.
