Diamonds are a girl's best friend, and LUMI Programmers are a cinephile's best friend. We are setting sail for Paris with a couple of showgirls looking for a good time.
Directed by Howard Hawks, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes follows Lorelei Lee (Marilyn Monroe) and Dorothy Shaw (Jane Russell) on a cruise to Paris. Engaged to be married, Lorelei promises to be on her best behaviour - single Dorothy does nothing of the sort. Little do they know, they are on board with a private detective hired by Lorelei's fiancé's father. Let the games begin!
This film granted Monroe two partnerships that would last a lifetime. A friendship with co-star Jane Russell and a collaborator in choreographer Jack Cole, who continued to work with Monroe on several of her films, including Bus Stop and Some Like it Hot. Key to shaping "non-dancer" Monroe, Cole created a hot-pink dance sequence that would echo through pop culture to this day, catapulting Monroe to stardom.
This screening will be introduced by LUMI Programmer, Niamh Quinn.
Screening as part of Marilyn Monroe 100 at QFT, a season celebrating 100 years of a screen icon.
