Few of us miss the technical failings of the DVD, but for sure the streaming world has robbed us of its shining light – DVD extras. For this event we revitalise the filmmaker’s commentary in all its glory. What better film to start this new Docs Ireland strand than one of the funniest, most beautiful, ecstatically truthful films ever made – Werner Herzog’s Grizzly Man.

Pieced together from Timothy Treadwell’s video footage, Herzog’s remarkable documentary examines the calling that drove Treadwell to live among a tribe of wild grizzly bears on an Alaskan reserve. With Joe Bini and Herzog at the helm, the footage he shot serves as a window into our understanding of all life on earth.

As a film editor, Joe Bini has collaborated with Werner Herzog on twenty-seven documentaries and feature films, including Grizzly Man and Little Dieter Needs to Fly. In a distinguished career, Bini has also edited films for Lynne Ramsay (We Need to Talk About Kevin), Laura Poitras (All the Beauty and the Bloodshed) and Andrea Arnold (American Honey, Bird).
