What would you do if your child was switched at birth? Which child would you choose: your biological son or the one you’ve raised for 6 years?
One day, ambitious architect Ryota (Masaharu Fukuyama) and his wife Midori (Machiko Ono) receive an unexpected phone call from the hospital. Their son, Keita, is not actually “theirs”. When a blood test reveals Keita and another baby were switched at birth, two very different families are thrown together and forced to make a difficult decision.
With its high stakes set up Kore-eda’s drama asks probing questions about gender, class, life-work balance, nature versus nurture, and, above all, what it means to be a father.
Part of Of Flesh and Blood: The Cinema of Hirokazu Kore-eda, a season of films and events celebrating the work of the Japanese director.
