In this poignant debut feature, Emmanuelle Nicot explores the ramifications of abuse with deep sensibility and uncompromising grace, in a hopeful journey to recovery for titular twelve-year-old Dalva.
Dalva, 12, (Zelda Samson) lives alone with her father (Jean-Louis Coulloc’h). One evening, the police storm their home and take her into foster care.
As Dalva befriends her new roommate Samia (Fanta Guirassi) and social worker Jayden (Alexis Manenti), she gradually comes to understand that the love she shared with her father was not what she thought. With their help, Dalva sets out on a transformative journey, learning to become a child again.
A Cannes Critics’ Week winner, this emotionally-charged, affectingly hard-hitting drama is an incredibly brave debut feature for director Emmanuelle Nicot, which highlights both director Nicot and the extraordinary young leading actor Zelda Samson as fast-rising stars.
“First-time feature director Emmanuelle Nicot paints an achingly beautiful portrait of friendship, recovery and identity through a young girl’s childhood sexual abuse story.” Little White Lies
