Inspired by true events, the film follows detectives Park Doo-man (Song Kang-Ho) and Seo Tae-yoon (Kim Sang-kyung) as they investigate what appears to be South Korea’s first documented serial killer. With the body count rising and only basic skills and bumbling colleagues at their disposal, the detectives resort to dubious methods in order to gain information. With the pressure on, they race against the clock to piece together clues before the killer can strike again.

In true Bong Joon Ho fashion, Memories of Murder sees styles blend with distinctive flair. It is an old-school crime film with a hilariously dark edge. It is unafraid of social satire, shining a light on Korea’s former military dictatorship and brutal, unprofessional police techniques with a sharp eye and a loud laugh. The result is, unsurprisingly, extraordinary.
