A fusion of future noir and slick action flick, Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report, featuring Tom Cruise, is an ingenious roller coaster ride of sci-fi thrills.
Based on a Philip K. Dick story, the first collaboration between Spielberg and Cruise is set in the year 2054, where a trio of "pre-cogs" — ethereal mutants with the ability to foresee the future — is used by the government's Department of PreCrime to prevent crimes before they happen, and punish the perpetrators in advance of their actual act.
Following the screening, Professor Brian Arthur will join a short panel discussion exploring what the film imagined the future would look like, and how that compares with the world we live in today.
Professor Arthur is an economist, author, and External Professor at the Santa Fe Institute, widely recognised for his work on complexity economics and technological change. He served as an advisor to Steven Spielberg on Minority Report, helping to shape the film’s vision of future technologies.
