Christian Petzold’s (Afire) latest is a puzzling psychological drama about the connections that bring us back to life after tragedy.
On a remote German country road, Laura (Paula Beer) survives a car crash that kills her partner. Though unharmed, she is in a quasi-catatonic daze. Taken in by Betty (Barbara Auer), an older local woman, Laura becomes a willing blank canvas onto which the stranger dotes her motherly care.
Petzold’s Miroirs No. 3 is a sharply written and gripping study of loss and trauma, and the potential for reinvention as they subside.
