Deftly told from a child’s perspective, My Father’s Shadow is a remarkable debut from British-Nigerian filmmaker, Akinola Davies. Film starts 8.45pm.
Semi-autobiographical and co-written with his brother, Wale, the film follows two brothers as they leave their rural village and spend a rare day with their father in Lagos alongside the backdrop of the 1993 election. As the day goes on emotions build as political tensions rise and their father asks questions of his employer, while the boys see the fabric of vibrant city life in wide-eyed wonder.
Beautifully captured from the adoring and fascinated upward gaze of boys who deeply admire their father - played expertly by Gangs of London and Slow Horses star, Sope Dirisu - the film is a heartfelt and authentic snapshot of a certain time and place in both Nigerian politics and personal family history.
