With a keen feeling for atmosphere and metaphor, Ainara Vera’s (Gunda) doc sketches the lives of two sisters, who see the birth of a new family member as an opportunity to break the cycle of their troubled history.

Hayat is a skilled sea woman who sails across the Arctic, navigating far away from people and her life in France. Her conversations with her sister Leila are brief but intimate, with their difficult upbringing - an alcoholic mother and absent father - giving them a sense that they can only rely on each other. But when Leila gives birth to a baby girl, Hayat begins to see the promise of new beginnings on the horizon.

Having written and edited documentaries for the likes of Viktor Kossakovsky, Vera’s feature debut is filmed with respect and affection, with the director focusing almost solely on the two sisters and newborn, showing what is essentially a touching sisterly love story.

From 31 Mar - 16 Apr, Visions of Europe returns to celebrate the breadth of European cinema. With a handpicked selection of 24 films from a Macedonian witch tale to a race through Berlin, we take in the best of European film including previews, festival hits and classics returning to the big screen.
