Acclaimed filmmaker Alice Diop (Nous) reinvents the courtroom drama in this concentrated, gripping study of a writer and the young African woman whose fate comes to fascinate her.
The film follows novelist Rama (Kayije Kagame) who attends the trial of Laurence Coly (Guslagie Malanda), a young woman accused of killing her 15-month-old daughter. As the legal proceedings move forward, the words of the accused along with witness testimonies begin to shake Rama’s convictions and call into question both her judgement and that of the viewer.
Co-written by Goncourt-winning novelist Marie NDiaye, this finely observed film features mesmerising performances from its cast and sees director Alice Diop achieving maturity as a fiction director. This film will be a must-see for 2023.
"A stunning film which stirringly builds a confessional out of the stones in the hands of merciless executioners." Little White Lies
