Iranian Shayda finds refuge in an Australian women’s shelter with her six-year-old daughter, Mona. Over Persian New Year, they take solace in Nowruz rituals and new beginnings, but when her estranged husband re-enters their lives, Shayda’s path to freedom is jeopardised.
Having fled her husband and filed for divorce, Shayda (Holy Spider's Zar Amir Ebrahimi) struggles to maintain normalcy for her daughter Mona (Selina Zahednia). Buoyed by the approach of Nowruz (Persian New Year), she tries to forge a fresh start with new and unfettered freedoms. But when a judge grants her husband Hossein (Osamah Sami) visitation rights, he re-enters their life, stoking Shayda’s fear that he’ll attempt to take Mona back to Iran.
Drawn from personal experiences, Iranian-Australian filmmaker Noora Niasari’s powerful debut feature is a beautifully crafted, poetic vérité portrayal of courage and compassion, anchored by a heart-rending performance by Zar Amir Ebrahimi.
"A film with airtight verisimilitude: you don’t doubt its authenticity for a moment...an exciting new voice in Australian cinema has arrived." - Luke Buckmaster, The Guardian
