Screening in partnership with Trans Pride NI, Shinjuku Boys is a tender fly-on-the-wall documentary depicting the daily lives of three Japanese 'onnabe' who work as hosts in a Tokyo nightclub.
A verité-style doc that follows the daily goings on of three Japanese ‘onnabe’ – people who are assigned female gender at birth but engage in masculine self-representation – directors Kim Longinotto (Shooting the Mafia) and Jano Williams' (Gaea Girls) observational and intimate approach takes the viewer into their world and allows the three onnabe to express their identity with a tender candour not often captured on film.
