QFT has partnered with the Sonorities Festival Belfast to present a free double-bill lunchtime screening of audiovisual work each day of the festival.
The two works, Vince Briffa's OUTLAND and Virgilio Oliveira's Douro: Symphony of a River, explore themes of dislocation and connection between humans and bodies of water.
Screening Programme:
Virgilio Oliveira – Douro: Symphony of a River (15 mins)
Vince Briffa – OUTLAND (14 mins)
OUTLAND (by Vince Briffa) was first shown as a video, audio, voice, wood and water installation at the Malta Pavilion, Venice Biennale, 2019. It is inspired by Homer’s Odyssey and reflects on Odysseus’ refusal to accept Calypso’s offer of immortality and what it means to be human. It is a metaphor for the anxiety brought about by our constant quest to redefine ourselves and our relationships, and our refusal to be confined within a defined comfort zone. The work extracts snippets taken from life focused on willing dislocation at the expense of safer and more peaceful harbours. It ultimately seeks to redefine the notion of home, particularly one lived on a land surrounded by huge expanses of water.
Douro – Symphony of a River
by Virgilio Dias de Oliveira
A short documentary about time a place; about the flow of water and human presence through the banks of the river Douro. The film follows this Iberian river, from the glacier carved mountains of Picos the Urbion in northern Spain, towards the Atlantic Ocean in Porto, Portugal.
