Exploring the aesthetic and thematic influence Powell and Pressburger’s films have had on cinema, LUMI’s young programmers, in collaboration with Ghouls on Film, present an immersive dance performance and screening of Dario Argento’s giallo horror Suspiria.
An essential horror classic, Argento’s film follows a ballet student who, after a series of brutal murders, realises her school is a front for a supernatural conspiracy. This event will feature an original, improvisational and intimate dance piece curated by artist Janie Doherty, prior to the film.
Sharing aesthetic links with Powell and Pressburger’s films, Suspiria’s bold use of colour and design shows how influential the filmmaking duo’s work was on later directors. Argento’s use of a claustophobic all-female environment, specifically the ballet school, directly links his masterpiece to Powell and Pressburger’s The Red Shoes and Black Narcissus.
Part of Cinema Unbound: The Creative Worlds of Powell and Pressburger. With support of the BFI Film Audience Network, awarding funds from the National Lottery in order to bring this project to more audiences across the UK. This screening is also part of the Belfast International Arts Festival, which takes place throughout Belfast from 12 October to 5 November.
