Lar's von Trier's outrageously provocative, enduringly controversial dark comedy, The Idiots, returns for its 25th anniversary.
A transgressive commune, with a large Copenhagen house as their base, stage a series of provocations challenging social taboos, living as their ‘inner idiot’. When diner Karen (Bodil Jørgensen) witnesses their behaviour at a restaurant, she becomes a player in their shocking, increasingly offensive troupe.
The second film of the Dogme ’95 avant-garde Danish film movement – after Festen by Thomas Vinterberg (Another Round) – this Palme d’Or nominated study in boundary-pushing provocation employs documentary style aesthetics to bracingly raw, astonishingly uncomfortable effect.
Screening as part of Enduring Provocations: Lars von Trier. This screening also includes a 5 minute recorded intro 'Musings on Lars von Trier’ by filmmaker Ari Aster (Midsommar, Beau Is Afraid).
