This is How a Child Becomes a Poet, her first entirely self-made film, is a love letter and an elegy, filmed at the house of Italian poet Patrizia Cavalli just after her death, when her vivid creative spirit is still palpable in her manuscripts – and her prized signed photograph of Kim Novak, the screen presence who awoke her desire to write and to love women. Amid the memories, Sciamma enacts a ritual of cinematic time travel, dancing across eras and forms.

Work-in-progress Tutti Frutti is full of world travel, time travel and travel into the unique vision of a filmmaker reinventing herself. Montaging powerful protests for Palestine and the bitter end of the #MeToo movement with moments of reflectiveness and intimacy in a world on fire, the film’s meditative, gentle angry carrier bag gathers us together in our moment, asking how (in Ursula K. Le Guin’s words) to be mud – tactile and tactical – for a frightening future.

After the screening, Céline Sciamma will join us to offer her thoughts on what’s now and next, and how we create it together, in conversation with writer and feminist film curator So Mayer.
