QFT favourite Ben Wheatley (Kill List, High-Rise) returns with an eerie story of a global virus, a missing scientist and the dark side of Mother Nature.
As a deadly virus ravages the world, Dr. Martin Lowery (Joel Fry) embarks on a mission to join a research hub deep in the Arboreal Forest. The arduous journey, guided by park scout Alma (Ellora Torchia), is set back by a night time attack that leaves the two bruised and shoeless. When they run into Zach (Reece Shearsmith), a man living off the grid, they gratefully accept his help. Zach’s intentions aren’t exactly what they seem, however, and a path out of the forest and into safety quickly fades as the line between myth and science blurs.
Conceived and made entirely during lockdown, In the Earth uses an understated and unnerving synth score by Clint Mansell, mystical allusions, and nature itself to instil a feeling of unease and danger which unfolds into a trippy, psychedelic kaleidoscope of changing colours, shapes, and sounds that turns the world inside out.
This film contains a sequence of flashing lights which might affect customers who are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy.
"The film feels like the love child of Kill List and A Field in England, but cleaves closer to straight horror, with a creeping sense of dread established from the opening scene." - Hannah Strong, Little White Lies
