Based on the novel Drive Your Plough Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk, Agnieszka Holland's Spoor ranges from humourous detective story to exciting eco-thriller to feminist fairy-tale.

An eccentric part-time English teacher and an animal rights defender, Janina Duszejko, who lives in a small town in the Polish mountains loses her two beloved dogs. A few months later she stumbles upon the dead body of her neighbour, a poacher. The only traces leading to the mysterious death are those of roe deer hooves…

As time goes by, more grisly, and equally mysterious, killings are discovered. All victims were passionate hunters who knew each other very well. The police investigation proves ineffective. Duszejko has her own theory that the deaths could have been the animals’ revenge…

From 29 March to 18 April, Visions of Europe returns to celebrate the breadth of European cinema.
