Screening as part of Walled Cities 4, Smuggling Hendrix pokes fun at the absurdity of human politics when a dog wanders across the border between the Turkish and Greek sides of Cyprus.
The Walled Cities event series returns with a unique theme for 2022: the impact of conflict on animals and children.
Yiannis (Adam Bousdoukos) plans to leave Cyprus for a better life in Europe, but his dog Jimi has crossed the UN buffer zone separating the Greek from the Turkish side of the island. As it is impossible to bring him back legally, Yiannis reluctantly joins forces with a cast of unexpected characters to smuggle him back.
Treading a fine line between comedy and political commentary, producer-turned-director Marios Piperides revels in the delight of finding funny situations in a complicated world.
The screening will be followed by a discussion led by Dr Gul Kacmaz Erk, senior lecturer in Architecture at Queen’s University. Gul's guest speakers are Dr Edwar Calderón and Dr Gulseli Baysu, both from Queen’s University. Edwar is a research fellow at the School of Natural and Built Environment and conducts interdisciplinary research on urban-rural development, human geography, architecture and education in geographies of conflict. Gulseli is a lecturer in Psychology; her expertise is on the social psychology of cultural diversity, immigration and integration, intergroup relations, identity politics and political participation of minorities.
Colombian music will follow the film screening/discussion. Mr. Klaje, based in Cali, Colombia is a group of musicians and educators that provide musical-educational projects to young people immersed in violent contexts. They have been working for about 10 years with underserved young people, many of whom are Afro-descendants and from indigenous populations, who have been forcibly displaced through violence and armed conflict to instead find alternative futures through arts and music collaborations.
This event is part of CACity presents: Walled Cities 4, a short film season exploring political conflict in divided communities and walled cities around the world. Presented by CACity (Cinema and Architecture in the City) Collaborative Research Group in collaboration with Film Hub NI and Foyle Film Festival.
A CineArch interactive exhibition by MSc Advanced Architectural Design students, bringing cinema and architecture together, will take place in the QFT foyer between 6-27 April.
