Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr are both superb in this enjoyable tear-jerking romance with more than a hint of comedy.

As with Hitchcock and his two versions of The Man Who Knew Too Much, in the mid-1950s Leo McCarey remade his own trim ’30s classic (the 1939 Love Affair, with Charles Boyer and Irene Dunne) in a considerably longer version, with the addition of glorious Technicolor and breathtaking CinemaScope.

Cary Grant takes over the Boyer role as a playboy who meets and falls in love with a nightclub singer (Deborah Kerr) on a luxury liner heading from Europe to New York. Though each is romantically committed to another, they agree that if they have not married within six months, they will meet again on a set date at the top of the Empire State Building. Fate intervenes, leading to one of the cinema’s greatest tear-jerking conclusions.

This is an inclusive screening experience for people living with dementia, their families and carers. QFT is committed to the Age-friendly Belfast Charter.
