Cult favourite Takashi Miike (13 Assassins) slices and slashes his way through this stunning swordplay adventure.

Based on the eponymous manga by Hiroaki Samura, Blade of the Immortal follows Manji (Takuya Kimura), a warrior who cannot be killed. After young Rin (Hana Sugisaki) witnesses the slaughter of her parents, she asks Manji to avenge their deaths. One by one, Manji tracks them down, leading the audience through one stylised showdown after another; all brilliantly choreographed, outlandishly violent and sometimes brutally comic to boot.

While fellow exploitation cinema connoisseur Quentin Tarantino has mooted his retirement from filmmaking, Japan’s Takashi Miike, just two years Tarantino’s senior, has passed triple figures as director. Though he has made several more since, Blade of the Immortal has the distinction of being Miike’s 100th feature. The speed of the film’s production notwithstanding, this is lean and mean Miike – a filmmaker at his controlled and bloody best.
