John Gianvito's new film Her Socialist Smile is a spare, pure, and beautifully composed account of Helen Keller's political life as a supporter of progressive causes.
Incorporating footage of Keller's home life, her surroundings, and her teacher Anne Sullivan, the director approaches the film in a way which allows audiences to register information as Keller herself did, by engaging what she called "the eyes of the mind". Text is separated from image, voice from text, and, in some cases, image from context. The result is a kind of post-structuralist object that nonetheless imparts a vast amount of historical and biographical information.
"The film is fascinating - a portrait of a woman who has little to lose and is willing to give her all for what she believes in - and an important addition to Keller's legacy." - Alissa Wilkinson, Vox
