This first theatrical feature by television director Naoko Nobutomo is a personal documentary chronicling the enduring love, resilience and struggles of her nonagenarian parents as her mother's Alzheimer's-related dementia gradually worsens.
Nobutomo started filming the everyday routines of her 85-year-old parents, who still live alone in their home. Along the way, she documents the development of her mother’s Alzheimer’s, showing both the bright and dark sides of her parents’ life together. The intimate confines of the film create a private, natural picture, one that brings out many beautiful moments despite its heavy subject matter.
Followed by a Q&A with director Naoko Nobutomo.
Screening as part of The Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme 2020 - Happiness is a State of Mind: Joy and Despair in Japanese Cinema.
Organised by the Japan Foundation with Major Support from Japan Airlines, Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation, and Yakult, with Sponsorship in Kind from SUQQU, and in Cultural Partnership with Modern Culture.
