Directed by two-time Grammy nominee D. Smith, Kokomo City takes up a seemingly simple mantle — to present the stories of four Black transgender sex workers in New York and Georgia.
D. Smith knows what it means to come out as a Black trans woman and lose everything. After a successful career in the music industry ended, she turned to filmmaking and, in the face of considerable odds, shot this punchy debut that looks into the lives of four sex workers. These are graphic, frank discussions of what it means to be a Black trans woman in the sex trade, juxtaposed with uncensored opinions from the cis men who make up their clientele.
Fresh from Sundance Film Festival, Kokomo City is a deeply compassionate, at times sobering, and often witty examination of race, capitalism and gender from those living at the sharpest end of society.
This bold first feature buzzes with passion, energy and intelligence, offering a refreshing rawness and vulnerability unconcerned with purity and politeness.
"Transcendent. D.Smith has arrived to change the game." Indiewire
