If there is one film that shows how Chantal Akerman never allowed easy judgements or interpretations, this portrait of a tortured relationship is it.
Adapting the fifth volume of Marcel Proust’s “In Search of Lost Time,” Akerman transforms the material into a mesmerising study of voyeurism, control, and sexual obsession centered on the relationship between a possessive young man (Stanislas Merhar) and his passive lover (Sylvie Testud), whom he is convinced is carrying on a lesbian affair.
As he relentlessly stalks her every move, the two find themselves imprisoned in a cycle of jealousy, erotic longing, and self-destruction.
This May, QFT celebrates one of cinema's mavericks with a season dedicated to filmmaker Chantal Akerman, the first female director to take the number one spot on Sight & Sound's Greatest Films of All Time poll.
