Northern Ireland Screen presents a Spring shorts showcase. Recently screened to a local and national industry audience, this shorts selection includes a diverse set of films in animation, factual and fiction genres. Available to watch for free on QFT Player until Thurs 22 Apr.

There’s something for everyone in this showcase of new and emerging local talent. Northern Ireland Screen is delighted to share the films with the QFT Player audience. This showcase also includes a Q&A with the filmmakers whose work is presented, moderated by Eavan King.

Abomination (Dir: Nicky Larkin | 26 mins)

This documentary follows The Belfast Ensemble’s progress from their first week of rehearsals for Abomination: A DUP Opera in a church in east Belfast, right through to their sold-out performances in the Lyric Theatre, encapsulating the protest and celebrations around the historic introduction of marriage equality in Northern Ireland, and questions the role of art as protest in our troubled political times.

Arena (Dir: Helen Warner | 13 mins)

An experimental short film that explores the theme of female rivalry within the patriarchal arena. Trapped in a vicious circle fuelled by envy and jealousy, a theatre understudy transcends and finally confronts the real source of her dark emotions. Belfast writer and director Helen Warner's previous short, Stigma, was longlisted for the Live Action Short Film Academy Award and won the prestigious Grand Prix Irish Short Award at the Cork Film Festival.

Gone Viral (Dir: Nicky Larkin | 10 mins)

Pat (Steve Blount, Game of Thrones) always wanted to be world famous, but the world had other plans. Now locked down and on the wrong side of fifty, he sees the combination of a global pandemic and high-speed broadband as his opportunity to find fame at last. Along with his long-suffering wife Lizzy (Abigail McGibbon, recently seen in David Ireland's Sadie on BBC4), he embarks upon the new rock-n-roll - live streaming - and is willing to go to any lengths to "get the virus". Unfortunately for Pat, his wish comes true when an arts show host (Sing Street and Brooklyn's Peter Campion) mistakes his witless ramblings for satirical genius.

Hydebank (Dir: Ross McClean | 17 mins)

Governing the Northern Irish countryside, Hydebank Wood currently houses 104 young male offenders. Ryan, currently serving a 10-year sentence, has formed an unlikely bond with the prison's flock of sheep. Through their interactions, Ryan attempts to come to terms with the violent act that led him here. Hydebank was recently awarded Best Short Documentary at the Galway Film Fleadh, London Short Film Festival, Docs Ireland and Best British Short Film in the Leeds International Film Festival.

Rough (Dir: Adam Patterson and Declan Lawn | 14 mins)

A death sentence. A dog. A decision. In post-conflict Northern Ireland, paramilitaries have evolved into street gangs who enforce their own brutal street justice in the form of “punishment” attacks. But when they pass a death sentence on a local dog, they bite off more than they can chew. Produced by Louise Gallagher (A Bump Along the Way) and starring Michael Smiley (Kill List and TV's Luther), Ryan McParland (Calm with Horses) and Kelly (as Buddy the Dog), Rough won Best Irish Fiction Short at the 2020 Kerry International Film Festival.

Tot (Dir: Fiona McLaughlin, Tom Getty & Aimee Kirkham Priester | 12 mins)

A highly creative animated short, and winner of the James Horgan Award for Best Animation Short at the Galway Film Fleadh, Tot follows a young girl who, after the death of her father, roams through a mystical world carrying her grief with her in a delicare glass jar as she searches for closure.
