We love big screen classics revisited with a modern queer eye and if you haven’t seen this one, you’re in for a glorious treat!
Made in 1933 and screened here in 35mm, Queen Christina is one of early cinema’s most sophisticated examinations of gender and identity, with screen legend Greta Garbo perfectly cast as the arts loving, peace-seeking, bisexual Swedish monarch who was raised from birth as a boy and continued to present “as a man” throughout her reign. Garbo, who was also bisexual (she had documented dalliances with Tallulah Bankhead, Cecil Beaton, Billie Holiday and Louise Brooks to name but a few) was never more thrilling than in this quintessential screen portrayal that captures her graceful allure and enigmatic persona in one of her finest films.
