Luca Guadagnino and Challengers writer Justin Kuritzkes transport us to Mexico City in 1950 with their adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ semi-autobiographical novel.
William Lee (Daniel Craig), an American expat in Mexico City, spends his days almost entirely alone, except for a few contacts with other members of the small American community. His encounter with Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey), an expat former soldier, new to the city, shows him, for the first time, that it might be finally possible to establish an intimate connection with somebody.
Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville and impressive newcomer Starkey populate Guadagnino’s richly evocative and sensual film, which features a typically immersive score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
"Embodying Burroughs’ alter ego and cycling through Lee’s lust, jealousy, world-weariness, neediness, and bliss, Craig cracks this smitten, doomed romantic wide open. It’s the role of a lifetime if you hold nothing back. So he doesn’t." Rolling Stone
