One of Japan’s most active female directors, OGIGAMI Naoko, has broken new ground with this film, portraying the anxieties and suffering of women in contemporary society.
Sudo Yoriko lives an ordinary life, taking care of her husband, son, and father-in-law. Her life suddenly changes when her husband leaves her out of fear of radiation, possibly leaked due to the previous Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 and her beloved son sets off for university.
Feeling deserted and unrewarded, Yoriko devotes herself to the new religious group “Ryokumei-kai”, which worships water. Filling her days with daily prayers, she becomes content with her life alone.
However, her peaceful existence is disrupted when her husband suddenly reappears, suffering from terminal cancer, and wishing her to look after him.
This richly drawn comedy-drama expertly delves into various modern-day issues, such as life affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, caregiving, cults, and discrimination against the disabled. The Sudo family becomes a microcosm of society, reflecting the challenges faced by many.
