The lives and eras of four young women echo in the walls of a rural German farmhouse, in this ethereal and kaleidoscopic Cannes Jury Prize-winning portrait of womanhood.
Vignettes of Alma (Hanna Heckt) in the early 20th century, Erika (Lea Drinda) during the Second World War, Angelika (Lena Urzendowsky) in the 1980s and Lenka (Laeni Geiseler) in the present day, capture generational shifts and haunting parallels of loneliness, lost innocence and misogynistic abuse. A watchful, ghost-like camera observes them and the small intimate details of their worlds.
This is a mesmerising film of memories and tremendous cinema that is achingly present, which has seen Mascha Schilinski deservedly heralded as a great new German auteur.
Visions of Europe returns for its 5th edition, celebrating the breadth of European cinema with a handpicked selection of new releases, previews, festival hits and classics returning to the big screen.
