One of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s (known collectively as the Archers) most experimental and audacious films, The Tales of Hoffmann is a riotous cinematic fantasy of music and dance that tells the story of a poet’s three lost loves.

While waiting in a beer hall for opera singer Stella (Moira Shearer), poet Hoffmann (Robert Rounseville) regals fellow drinkers with stories of three former unobtainable desires – one in Paris, one in Venice and one on a Greek island. What follows is itself an opera, set to a pre-recorded score, with the singing performances taken up by dancers.

In many ways a companion piece to The Red Shoes, the Archers’ The Tales of Hoffmann is a nourishing cinematic poem exploring the dangerous, seductive power of love.

Part of Cinema Unbound: The Creative Worlds of Powell and Pressburger. With support of the BFI Film Audience Network, awarding funds from the National Lottery in order to bring this project to more audiences across the UK. This screening is also part of the Belfast International Arts Festival, which takes place throughout Belfast from 12 October to 5 November.
