Initially banned from screening in Iran, Taste of Cherry would go on to win the Palme d'Or in 1997, gaining global attention in spite of the country's strict censorship laws. Selected by our LUMI Programmers ahead of their Restriction and Resistance- Women in Iranian Cinema season in June.
LUMI programmers are excited to present Abbas Kiarostami's iconic work as a LUMI Presents screening outside of the main season. Showing in stunning 35mm.
This austere, emotionally complex drama by the great Kiarostami follows the enigmatic Mr. Badii (Homayoun Ershadi) as he drives around the hilly outskirts of Tehran looking for someone who will agree to bury him after he kills himself, a taboo under Islam. Extended conversations with three passengers (a soldier, a seminarian, and a taxidermist) elicit different views on mortality and individual choice.
"Taste of Cherry confirmed Kiarostami as the most acclaimed director of Iran's rich film culture..." TCM
