Set in the 1860s, Viggo Mortensen’s second outing as writer-director (Falling) is an elegantly realised feminist western starring Mortensen and Vicky Krieps as immigrants attempting to forge a life in a corrupt Nevada town.
In a frontier town run by corrupt forces, fiercely independent Vivienne Le Coudy (Krieps) embarks on a relationship with the passionate, hard-working Holger Olsen (Mortensen) but it’s one that leads to danger for them both.
With the threat of the Civil War looming, their future becomes uncertain when Holger decides to fight for the Union, leaving Vivienne on her own to face the dangerous threats of the corrupt mayor (Danny Huston), the power-hungry ranch owner (Garret Dillahunt) and the rancher’s violent son (Solly McLeod).
Framed in a style that emphasises the relationship between character and landscape, and infused with multiple exquisite performances, this is a portrait of a passionate woman determined to stand up for herself in an unforgiving world dominated by ruthless men.
