The Principal Enemy is an influential yet rarely-screened example of Latin America’s socially engaged Third Cinema movement. Chosen by our LUMI Programmers.
A peasant farmer is brutally murdered in the remote Peruvian Sierra. A passing guerilla group and the local peasant community seek to enact their own revenge against the perpetrators, the local landlord and his servant. Forming a people’s court, they pursue justice for both the murder of their friend, and the co-option of their land.
With over thirty credited directors, The Principal Enemy embodies the collectivist ideals of Latin America’s “Imperfect” Third Cinema. The Principal Enemy is a striking image of cinema’s politically mobilising potential.
Short film Lann, by LUMI Programmers Rena McGauley and Steven Burrows, will screen before the main feature. This film contains flashing images which might affect customers who are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy.
Supported by Film Hub NI, part of the BFI Film Audience Network, awarding funds from National Lottery.
