The story of a ballerina driven to breaking point by an obsessive impresario, The Red Shoes is a visually ravishing classic that blazes off the screen with its spellbinding beauty.
Vicky Page (Moira Shearer) is a young dancer suddenly catapulted into the position of prima ballerina due to the premature retirement of her company’s leading lady. Touring the world with the ballet The Red Shoes, Page, and the company’s director Boris Lermontov (Anton Walbrook) find massive success. However, when Page falls in love with company conductor Julian Craster (Marius Goring), Lermontov is livid with jealousy and presents Page with a choice – the ballet or Julian.
Often described by Martin Scorsese as the “the greatest ever” film, The Red Shoes is arguably the pinnacle of Powell and Pressburger’s creative collaboration, with every detail – from design to music, cinematography to choreography – painstakingly worked on to present a film that stands out as a remarkable artistic experience.
