William Thatcher (Heath Ledger) disguises himself as a noble knight to compete in jousting tournaments across Europe. With the help of his loyal friends (Mark Addy, Paul Bettany, Alan Tudyk and Laura Fraser), William rises through the ranks of the tournament circuit, all while hiding his true identity. 

Soon he is also competing for the heart of a noblewoman (Shannyn Sossamon), fuelling his rivalry with the ruthless Count Adhemar (Rufus Sewell).
